US News and World Report has recognized VMI as one of the top three public liberal arts colleges in the nation for the last eight years, following only the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.

VMI is a liberal arts college in the broadest sense of the term. Regardless of major, a cadet receives a well-rounded education. Cadets majoring in one of the liberal arts will find a challenging curriculum, respected professors, and well-resourced departments. Cadets are prepared to pursue graduate studies or move forward into key leadership roles in our country as civilians or military officers.

A liberal arts degree from VMI has opened doors for authors, actors, business leaders, scholars, civil servants, and diplomats. A liberal arts education is also a sound foundation for success in military service.

A cadet may be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in Economics and Business, English, History, International Studies and Political Science, Modern Languages and Cultures, or Psychology. Either a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree may be awarded in Psychology.
