John C. Allen '62

(Out-of-state alumnus, appointed July 2011) 

John C. Allen '62John C. Allen '62 of Coalton, WV is Chairman of the Board of J. F. Allen Company, a highway construction and materials firm founded by his father, James F. Allen '33. He joined the company in 1962 and rose to President in 1974. Engineering News Record included J. F. Allen Company in its 1999 survey of the nation's top 100 highway contractors.

Mr. Allen was born and raised in Clarksburg, WV, the birthplace of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. He comes from a family of road builders dating back to William Allen, a supervisor of roads in colonial New Jersey in the early 1700s. 

His father, James, graduated with the Class of 1933 (Civil Engineering), and his brother, David, graduated with the class of 1971 (Economics). Mr. Allen '33 served as his class agent and as a Trustee of the VMI Foundation, Inc. He received VMI's Distinguished Service Award in 1988. David '71 has served on the VMI Keydet Club Board of Governors. 

Mr. Allen graduated with a BS in biology. In 1988 he endowed the John C. Allen'62 Distinguished Professorship in Chemistry. He has served as his class agent and as a Trustee of the VMI Foundation, Inc. He has also supported the James F. Allen '33 Scholarship which provides financial aid to West Virginia cadets. He was presented with VMI's Distinguished Service Award in 2009.

Mr. Allen attended West Virginia University before entering VMI and has supported WVU over the years. In 2004 he received WVU's highest service accolade, induction into the Order of Vandalia. John was also named to the WVU College of Business and Economics Hall of Fame that same year. In 2006 WVU named John a "Most Loyal West Virginian."

John and Joyce Butler Allen married in 1969 at Winchester, VA; they are the parents of four children and the grandparents of 10. They have been involved in many charitable activities. In 2000 the Allen's endowed the Sara C. and James F. Allen Comprehensive Lung Cancer Program at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at West Virginia University. At Davis & Elkins College (Elkins, WV), where Joyce Allen serves on the Board of Trustees, the couple helped create the McDonnell Center for Health, Physical Education and Athletics, including the Hilda and Robert R. Butler Lobby.
