Secretary to BOV
Colonel Michael M. Strickler '71
Mike StricklerMike Strickler, a 1971 graduate of VMI, returned to his alma mater in 1975 and has served the Institute in several different capacities. His initial position was in athletic fund-raising with the VMI Keydet Club. In 1977, he became sports information director and held that position until 1992, when Superintendent Major General John Knapp named him public relations director.
He held that post during a most challenging time, the court case over VMI's all-male admissions policy and the eventual assimilation of women into the Corps of Cadets. In June 2001, Superintendent Lieutenant General Josiah Bunting III appointed him Executive Assistant to the Superintendent, and he was elected Secretary to the Board of Visitors.
In addition to his BA in history, Strickler earned a MA from the College of William and Mary in 1973. He has been active in community affairs and is an elder in the Lexington Presbyterian Church. He and his wife Doris, an art teacher in the Buena Vista public school system, have two children, Matthew & Amanda, both graduates of Washington & Lee University.
