Library Cataloging Assistant (full-time)

VMI’s Preston Library seeks an enthusiastic, team-oriented individual to work in its Technical Services department. Duties include:
• Copy cataloging of monographic and serial materials including research of cataloging resources to provide the best access points and cataloging in accordance with national standards. Works with Technical Services Librarian in developing proper original cataloging records and holdings. Input and edit records in OCLC and the ILS.
• Maintaining bibliographic and item information and records for monographic and serial materials including MFHD records and withdrawals.
• Maintaining authority records – resolve name, subject, and series authority control problems.
• Processing all incoming materials and perform first level repair of damaged materials.
• Supervising cadet assistants – provide work assignments, documentation of duties, and training of cadet assistants.
• Performs other duties and assignments as directed by management - assist with projects in other departments; maintain accurate statistics for work performed; provide and maintain documentation and procedures of job responsibilities.


Candidates should have experience with Microsoft Office software; excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task and to prioritize duties and meet deadlines; detail-oriented and accurate in all work; ability to work cooperatively with staff and librarians in various departments; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to work unsupervised

Preferred: Knowledge of AACR2, MARC formats, OCLC online bibliographic database, and automated library systems; related college coursework and library cataloging experience; supervisory or leadership experience.
