Game Day Challenge
November 17, 2012
VMI will be “greening the gridiron” during the home game on November 17. The Game Day Challenge is a national competition among colleges and universities to divert as much as possible from landfill waste.
Planning a tailgate party? Bring reusable serviceware for your guests. Or, if you must use disposable items, choose compostable or recyclable products.
2011 Results:
• Per Capita Recycling: 0.202 lbs recycled per person (22nd out of 75 schools)
• Per Capita Waste: 0.556 lbs of total waste per person (42nd out of 69 schools)
• Diversion Rate: 36.36% of waste was recycled (32nd out of 69 schools)
• Greenhouse Gas Reduction: 1.54 MTCDE avoided (26th out of 75 schools)

February 5 – March 31, 2012
VMI organized a recycle-themed Basketball Game, a community-wide E-Cycling Day, and distributed over $3,000 in grant-funded recycling containers and motivational prizes.
2012 Results:
• 15% overall recycling rate
• 26th in Cardboard (out of 605 National schools)
• 1st in Cardboard (out of 21 Virginia schools)
• 23,570 lbs of electronics collected
