David L. Copeland, MD

Copeland, DavidDavid Copeland, MD has been the Institute Physician at VMI since 1993. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine (please see explanation below) and specializes in Adolescent and Adult medicine with extensive experience in college health and sports medicine.

Dr. Copeland received a Bachelor of Arts from Stephen F. Austin University in English and a Master of Art from the University of Memphis. He then served in the Peace Corps in Africa before returning to Case Western Reserve University where he received his Medical Degree.

Dr. Copeland did his internship and residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He worked for an HMO in Internal Medicine in Boston for 2 years. Dr. Copeland then came to Lexington where he had a private practice in Internal Medicine with emergency room coverage for seven years before coming to VMI as the Post Physician.

Doctors of Internal Medicine (internists) focus on adult medicine and have had special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of diseases that affect adults. At least three of their seven or more years of medical school and residency training are dedicated to learning how to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases that are seen in the adult population.
