A modern infirmary is located on Post with a nurse on duty 24 hours a day. A staff of nurses and physicians evaluates and treats cadets for routine illnesses and injuries. Physicians are available Monday-Saturday during morning sick call and at other times by appointment. There are 20 beds in the infirmary available for overnight observation and isolation for those who cannot comfortably or safely stay in barracks. Cadets with more severe illnesses are referred to specialists or the local hospital for care.
An annual fee is part of the tuition expense of each cadet. There is no extra charge for visiting the infirmary and seeing the doctor or nurse. Many medications are dispensed at no charge. Lab tests sent to the laboratory will be billed to the cadet. Appointments with physicians off Post will be the responsibility of the cadet.
The Institute does not assume responsibility for the expense of caring for injuries sustained by students while training for or participating in intramural or club athletic events, the military program, clubs or similar activities. As of August 1, 2010, each cadet will be covered by an accident insurance policy which will cover up to $5,000 per injury. If the cadet is covered by another medical insurance policy, the accident coverage will be a secondary policy.
VMI strongly recommends that cadets carry health insurance. Many students are covered under their parents’ policies. If not, we encourage students to purchase a low-cost accident and health insurance plan to cover emergencies. If you would like more information about such policies, contact the Infirmary and we can help guide you in making your decision.
