 About the Collection

The Military Oral History Project is an initiative of VMI's John A. Adams '71 Center for Military History and Strategic Analysis. The Adams Center's mandate is "to promote innovation in military history and strategic studies," and its work focuses primarily on the Cold War. Support for this project comes from Mr. George J. Collins, Jr., ‘62 and from the National Endowment for the Humanities

Working in cooperation with the Adams Center, the VMI Archives is committed to making available online the completed oral histories and their accompanying documents. All interviews are presented in full-text format and many include audio excerpts; the project is ongoing and new material is added regularly to the database. The Center also sponsors an essay contest; the papers are available below.

Military Oral History Database

Interviews and accompanying material are accessed through the Military Oral History Database. The database is fully searchable by name, date, conflicts/areas/events, service branch, and summary keywords. You may also browse the records. Interviews cover periods from World War II through the present, with particular emphasis on the Cold War era.
