Lieutenant Commander David Lucian Williams, VMI Class of 1991

The Superintendent regrets to inform the VMI community of the death of Lieutenant Commander David L. Williams, U.S. Navy, on Sept. 11, 2001, during the terrorist attack on the Pentagon, where he worked for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Lieutenant Commander Williams matriculated from Herndon, Va., and earned a bachelor's degree in English from VMI, where he wore academic stars during his first class year. A three-year member of the Cadet newspaper staff, he served as the newspaper's editor during his first class year. He was a member of the track team during his fourth class year.

He was posthumously awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and a Purple Heart. A memorial service was held at Fort Myer, Va., on Sept. 28, 2001.

Among his survivors are his wife, Sara Heath Williams of Arlington, Va., who is expecting their third child; two daughters, Sophie Ann and Meredith; his father and stepmother of Newport, Ore.; his mother and stepfather; a sister, Becky Williams Urbanski; and a brother, Patrick Williams.

The Class of 1991 established a David Williams Memorial Fund to assist the family Lieutenant Commander Williams left behind.
