Major Paul R. Syverson III, VMI Class of 1993

syverson The Superintendent regrets to inform the VMI Family of the death of Army Major Paul R. Syverson III, VMI Class of '93. Major Syverson was killed in action on June 16, 2004 near Camp Anaconda in Iraq.

Survivors include his parents; wife, Jackie; seven-year-old son, Paul; and his two-month-old daughter, Amy Elizabeth.

Major Syverson grew up in Arlington Heights, Ill., and graduated from John Hershey High School in 1989. After graduating from VMI, he was assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group, based at Fort Campbell, Ky.

He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his role in stopping a prison revolt in Afghanistan in 2001. He was scheduled to return home from Iraq shortly.
 

A trust fund will be set up in the name of Paul Syverson's two children. Donations can be sent to:

A memorial fund for Paul Syverson's family has also been established with the Special Forces Association.
