The collection consists of descriptions of the Battle of New Market (May 15, 1864) written by Confederate and Union participants; battlefield maps; material concerning troop movements and positions; and miscellaneous related documents. The accounts were collected by author and historian Edward Raymond Turner, Henry A. Wise (VMI Class of 1862 & New Market cadet), and Benjamin A. Colonna (VMI Class of 1864 & New Market cadet). The bulk of the material dates from the period 1894-1915.

This reminiscence by Porter Johnson  (VMI Class of 1867) is typical of the documents in this collection.
