Configuring CAS/Shibboleth to unify University Authentication
Todd Dergenski & Vaibhav Dani
Bridging the authentication gap between academic services and administrative services is a challenge. Through the marriage of Central Authentication Service (CAS) and Shibboleth, leveraging open source solutions (SAML validate) over proprietary solutions (Banner validate), ODU has built a standards-based unified authentication environment that has bridged that gap. The result is a Single Sign-on environment across the primary services used at the University. Now the University Portal (Luminus 5), the University Learning Management System (Blackboard 9) and the University Administrative System (Banner 9), along with a host of other services, are accessed via a single authentication system. The result is lower administrative overhead for account provisioning, reduced ongoing configurations, ease of end-user use, lower customer support calls, added functionality and improved auditing options.
