VMI at a Glance

The mission of Virginia Military Institute is to develop educated, honorable men and women, prepared for the varied work of civil life, imbued with love of learning, confident in the functions and attitudes of leadership, possessing a high sense of public service, advocates of the American democracy and free enterprise system, and ready as citizen-soldiers to defend their country in time of national peril.

VMI has an enrollment of more than 1,600, drawing cadets nationally and internationally. It is the nation’s oldest state-supported military college, and U.S. News and World Report consistently ranks it among the top public-supported liberal arts colleges in the nation. The Institute offers 14 majors and 16 minors, with enrichment opportunities for cadets including the Institute Honors Program, the Institute Writing Program, International Programs, and the VMI Center for Undergraduate Research. VMI is a member of NCAA Division I (FCS) and the Big South Conference, with 18 intercollegiate sports.

VMI offers a relevant education within a military environment, developing character, engendering a sense of responsibility, and cultivating the ability to master adversity. These leadership traits are inculcated through cadet-led programming, including the Corps of Cadets, the Honor Court and the class system. All cadets take part in Army, Navy, Marine Corps, or Air Force ROTC programs. The VMI experience is a leadership lab, preparing cadets for military and civilian careers alike.

The Center for Leadership and Ethics enhances VMI’s system of leadership training by offering cadet programming focused on leadership, ethics, and character development, and a robust schedule of conferences on challenging topics of national and international interest. Through these programs VMI takes a leadership role in myriad national discussions, sharing insight with a broad external audience.
