Men's Soccer Highlights
Under first year head coach Richie Rose, the Keydets started off the season with an 0-9-1 mark in the first 10 contests of the year, a stretch where VMI scored only scored eight goals and were shutout in six of the matches. However, Rose went on to guide the Keydets to one of the top turnarounds in program history, as VMI finished the year 3-3-1 in the last seven matches. The latter portion of the season also included a 3-5 Big South mark, which was the best conference the record VMI has had in conference play since they were 3-4-1 in the SoCon in 2001.
The 2011 season also wrapped up the career of the top goalkeeper in VMI men’s soccer history in Brian Sowell wrapped up his Keydet career with several career records, as he leads the program in saves with 380, shutouts (10), and minutes played (5,993). After entering the season second in the career shutout record book with seven, he picked up the tying shutout against Saint Francis (N.Y.) and set the record in the 3-0 blanking of Radford on 10/20. Sowell went on to play professionally for the Richmond Kickers in the summer of 2011.
