LEXINGTON, Va., July 9, 2013 – Cadets involved in musical activities at VMI traveled many miles and performed before thousands during spring semester.
After marching in the 57th Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 21, the cadets of the Regimental Band and Pipe Band prepared for their trip to New Orleans, La., and their participation as the Queen’s Band in the Endymion Parade at Mardi Gras.
In addition to spring parades and ceremonies on post, the band cadets also performed at VMI basketball games, and the Pipe Band performed off post on three occasions.
Cadets in the VMI Glee Club traveled more than 1,500 miles during their spring furlough trip to Florida. The highlight was the group’s performance at the Villages hosted by Col. Walt Chalkley ’74. The Glee Club sang in Lynchburg and Lexington at concerts and church services and performed the national anthem at the Martinsville 500 stockcar race in front of thousands of NASCAR fans.
The VMI Commanders jazz band performed at dances and concerts, including one at Mary Baldwin College and three in Lynchburg.
The cadets rounded out their year with the New Market Parade and the graduation concert in Jackson Memorial Hall before a large audience of cadets, parents, and members of the VMI community.
