VMI Resolves Surplus Computer Issue
LEXINGTON, Va., Nov. 18, 2013 – Virginia Military Institute has accounted for all computers erroneously sold with hard drives that had not been erased.
“We had wonderful cooperation from all the buyers,” said Col. Stewart MacInnis, the Institute’s spokesman. “We were able to account for all the computers and are confident that no sensitive information has been released.”
MacInnis noted that because a records review revealed that hard drives had been removed or erased from the majority of computers sold at two surplus equipment auctions held in October VMI had to contact only a handful of buyers.
“We notified state authorities of the erroneous sale and the actions we had taken,” MacInnis said. “We are reviewing and updating our procedures to ensure there is no recurrence of this situation.”
