VMI Names New Director of Assessment
Lt. Col. Lee Rakes
LEXINGTON, Va., Jan. 29, 2014 – Lt. Col. Lee Rakes has been named director of Institute assessment and evaluation in the Office of Assessment and Institutional Research at Virginia Military Institute. Rakes began his duties on Jan. 10.
Rakes succeeds Col. Elizabeth Sechler, who retired on Dec. 31, 2013. Rakes had served as a research and assessment analyst in that office since August 2012.
A native of Bassett, Va., Rakes came to VMI with a background in educational psychology and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, which he completed in 2012.
Rakes noted that the research and assessment analyst position at VMI was an ideal fit for him. “The job [at VMI] was right up my alley,” said Rakes. “It was perfect. I couldn’t have imagined a better position to start out in and a better place to work for.”
In his new position, Rakes will serve as a liaison with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He will also assist with evaluation efforts with many entities across post, including the Center for Leadership and Ethics, the commandant’s office, and the dean’s office. His office oversees collection and submission of data to state and federal agencies. It is also responsible for conducting surveys of all types and evaluating their results.
In addition to his doctorate, Rakes also holds a master’s degree in health promotion and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, both from Virginia Tech.
