Technical Electives

CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS FOR TECHNICAL ELECTIVES 

Six technical electives are chosen by the cadet in consultation with a faculty adviser and subject to the distribution shown below.

DESIGN (At least two courses must be selected.)

  • CE 403 Foundations (Spring)
  • CE 408 Hydraulic engineering (Spring)
  • CE 415 Water and Air: Physical, Chemical, and Biological Processes (Fall)
  • CE 423† Structural steel design (Fall & Spring)
  • CE 428† Topics in structural design (Fall)
  • CE 436 Transportation planning and design (Fall)

BASIC SCIENCE (At least one course must be selected.)

  • GE 306 Engineering geology (Fall and Spring)
  • CE 412 Environmental engineering chemistry (Spring)
  • Other CH or PY 300 or 400 level courses, if approved by CEE department head

ENGINEERING SCIENCE (At least one course must be selected.)

  • CE 401 Hydrology (Fall)
  • CE 402† Structural mechanics (Fall)
  • CE 404 Advanced mechanics of fluids (Spring)
  • CE 406 Groundwater hydrology and contamination (Spring)

HUMANITIES-SOCIAL SCIENCE (HS) ELECTIVES 

Humanities and social science electives may be selected from 200-level or higher courses in economics (EC), English (EN), fine arts (FA), history (HI), philosophy (PH), psychology (PS), political science (PO), or theology (TH); courses at the 100 level may be selected in modern languages. Thesis, seminars, independent research, special projects, management and writing courses are not acceptable.

WRITING INTENSIVE COURSES 

Each cadet must take a minimum of two upper level courses designated as “writing intensive,” at least one of which must be in his or her major. For CE majors, the required courses, CE 319W and CE 321W, fulfill this requirement.
