While Abroad Information for Parents
While abroad, cadets are encouraged to register with the U.S. Embassy. This can even be done online before they depart. It is also important to check VMI email regularly so that they receive timely information about important matters including pre-registration for the following semester.
Cadets should notify their resident director and the Office of International Programs of any concerns (academic, health, etc.) that come up while abroad.
Culture shock is a normal part of study abroad. The key to helping your son or daughter deal with culture shock is patience. Be aware that they will likely go through at least some of the "phases" of culture shock:
- Honeymoon phase
- Irritability & Hostility
- Understanding & Adjustment
- Integration & Acceptance
