The VMI Foundation’s mission is simple: to raise, steward, and invest the funds entrusted to it by members of the VMI Family for the sole purpose of advancing Virginia Military Institute.

Operating as a private, non-profit corporation since 1937, the VMI Foundation annually raises millions of dollars in gifts and commitments from VMI’s alumni, parents, and friends as well as manages hundreds of millions of dollars in endowments.

With this private money, the VMI Foundation supports the constant improvement of the Institute’s academic and co-curricular programs. It also supports capital improvements on Post  in order to ensure that VMI has the high-quality facilities necessary to provide a modern education to the Corps of Cadets and a healthful environment in which they live, learn, and compete.   Endowments that the VMI Foundation manages provide millions of dollars in financial aid to cadets every year. 

In the current academic year, the VMI Foundation is providing more than $12.3 million in direct aid to the Institute and its faculty, staff, and cadets. 

As a private entity, the VMI Foundation also provides an indirect financial benefit to the Institute by removing from it the financial burden of running and staffing its own development office.

The VMI Foundation’s support sustains almost every aspect of VMI’s extraordinary education. Indeed, without private support, it is doubtful that VMI would have its national reputation for excellence.
