New Faculty

Jeff Smith joins us after finishing a 21-year career in the United States Air Force.  Jeff’s educational credentials consist of a B.A. in economics from the University of South Carolina, a M.S. in Applied Economics from Wright State University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Tennessee.  Jeff is married to Lisa Smith, and they have two boys, Jeffrey and Phillip, ages 17 and 16 respectively.  Jeff’s career in the Air Force spanned three different occupational specialties and two continents.  He started as a second lieutenant ICBM missile launcher officer, spent approximately ten years working in various financial managements jobs both in the U.S. and Germany, and for the last ten years he was either in school or teaching, first at the Air Force’s graduate school, and finally at the United States Air Force Academy. 

Jennifer E. Gerow earned a Ph.D. in Management (concentration: Information Systems) from Clemson University. She also has an MBA and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a minor in Secondary Education. She has 9 years of industry experience in e-commerce. Her research interests are power and politics in the workplace, IT-business strategic alignment, and motivation to use information systems. Jennifer and Charles, her husband, are both excited about joining the VMI family. 

Valentina Dimitrova-Grajzl received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2006. She also holds a Master’s degree from UMD and a Bachelor’s Degree from Wittenberg University. She was previously an assistant professor at the Department of Public Policy at the Central European University and a visiting assistant professor at Washington and Lee University’s Economics Department. Her teaching and research focuses on economics of institutions, post-socialist economies and politics, economic history, and law and economics.
