Faculty Development

The quality of the Institute's Academic Program rests largely on our ability to attract, develop, and retain a faculty of the highest caliber. VMI seeks to cultivate an intellectually vibrant, cohesive, and giving faculty that is committed to delivering a challenging undergraduate experience designed to develop cadets' abilities to anticipate, respond, and lead in a complex and changing world. Small class sizes enable faculty to interact closely with cadets both inside and outside of the classroom. VMI boasts a 11.9 : 1* student to faculty ratio.

Faculty Development Opportunities

The Dean of the Faculty sponsors an array of developmental opportunities—financial as well as practical support—to enable faculty to prosper as members of our educational community.

  • Faculty may apply for awards for travel grants to support their research and course development, and for leave to pursue scholarly or pedagogical projects.
  • The Dean is fully committed to providing the resources necessary to enable faculty to meet the ideals expressed in the Institute’s Statement on Faculty Expectations.

          Faculty Development and Support Activities

  • The Institute also boasts a  Professorships and Chairs Program that acknowledges excellence among our permanent faculty and brings visiting scholars and teachers to Post each year.
  • Faculty may submit a Core Curriculum Course Proposal designed to elicit information that will help the Core Curriculum Oversight Committee understand how the proposed course will enable students to realize the learning outcomes the Core is intended to develop.

100% of VMI full-time faculty in degree-granting departments hold the Ph.D.  They are renowned for teaching excellence, mentorship of students, scholarly engagement and expertise, commitment to service, and encouragement of undergraduate research.
