LibX VMI Edition
LibX Virginia Military Institute edition is a Firefox and Internet Explorer extension that provides direct access to library resources. This Edition has been specifically tailored to allow VMI users seamless access to Preston Library's print and electronic holdings using LibX's toolbar, right-click menu, embedded cues and autolinks.
Toolbar:
Search the Preston Library catalog and Google Scholar from anywhere on the net using the LibX toolbar. Toolbar search blanks allow keyword, title, author and standard ID number searches.
Use the
icon to add extra search blanks. A screencast on using the toolbar is available from the LibX Homepage (Requires Macromedia Flash)
Right-click menu: Highlight text on a web page or PDF document and right-click to get the following menu:
Search the Preston Library Catalog directly with "Search Now" options
- Paste highlighted text to the tool bar with "Add Selection to Search as..." option
- Pass terms to Google Scholar using the "Search via Scholar" option
- Or drag and drop text to the Scholar button on the toolbar
To get full text access to journal articles, LibX searches Google Scholar and then redirects you to the full text if Preston Library subscribes to that journal. You can even highlight or drag and drop an entire citation into Google Scholar.
Embedded Cues: LibX will place cues in web pages that discuss books and journals allowing you to see if Preston owns a copy. Cues are also inserted at the top of Yahoo! and Google results screens, clicking these cues will pass your web search straight to the Preston Library Catalog.
Sites with embedded cues:
- Amazon.com
- Barnes & Noble
- BooksInPrint
- Google
- Google Scholar (you must add VMI as your library in Scholar Preference
- New York Times Book Review
- Yahoo!
Visit the LibX site to watch a screencast for examples of this cool feature. (Requires Macromedia Flash)
Autolinks and xISBN: LibX has the ability to recognize ISSNs, ISBNs and other standard identification numbers used by libraries worldwide. A book can have different ISBNs for the paperback, hardcover, or different editions. When LibX finds one of these it will automatically turn the number into an autolink that you may use to search for specific books and journals at Preston Library. This example from WorldCat shows an autolinked ISBN: 0374292795. Clicking the autolink lets the user see if Preston Library owns a copy of this book.
