Seven VMI faculty members have been awarded leaves of absence during the 2007-08 academic year.
Col. Mike Tierney, professor of mathematics and computer science, has received the Wachtmeister faculty development leave in spring 2008 to study genetic algorithms and develop a foundation in the study of computer vision.
Lt. Col. Jon-Michael Hardin, associate professor of mechanical engineering, has received the VMI awards faculty development leave for fall term to develop a comprehensive and integrated “Introduction to Mechanical Engineering” course.
The Ayres faculty development leave has been awarded to Lt. Col. Roger Thompson, associate professor of English, to conduct research and draft chapters for a book on Ralph Waldo Emerson and the history of rhetoric in the fall.
Four professors have received Jackson-Hope faculty development leaves. Lt. Col. Elena Andreeva, associate professor of history, will conduct research and work on a book on the Orient in Russian culture next spring. Col. Tappey Jones, professor of chemistry, will pursue multidisciplinary studies in insect-plant interactions and insect olfaction during the 2007-08 year. Lt. Col. Stan Smith, associate professor of chemistry, will conduct research on the synthesis of heterocyclic molecules during the spring, and Col. Mark Wilkinson, professor of history, will pursue language studies and work on a book tentatively titled “At the Crossroads: Shanghai in Chinese-American Relations, 1937-1950” during the fall in China.
