New Horizons: The VMI Journal of Undergraduate Writing, established in 2007 as an undergraduate research journal, now showcases the full range of academic writing done by cadets across disciplines, including research and non-research based writing. Cadets are encouraged to submit writing projects they have produced in their courses, including (but not exclusively) those produced in Writing Intensive courses, capstone courses, and Cultures and Civilizations courses, as well as writing resulting from undergraduate research sponsored activities (e.g. SURI).
All VMI cadets may publish in the journal, regardless of academic major. Each article is assessed by the faculty mentor, the department head (or his or her designated representative), an outside reviewer, and the New Horizons Editorial Board before publication to ensure that only superior undergraduate writing is represented in the journal.
