VMI Hockey provides prospective students the opportunity to play competitive collegiate hockey at the nation's oldest state-supported military college. The Institute holds the highest standards of integrity, leadership and camaraderie and that is no different for the Ice Hockey team.
The program competes in the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference which is comprised of Appalachian State, Christopher Newport, East Carolina, George Mason, George Washington, Loyola, NC State III, Northern Virginia, Old Dominion, Radford, Richmond, Salisbury, The Citadel, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Wilmington, and William & Mary. Since the club team's founding in 2004 it has produced four playoff appearances and an overall record of 48-42-4. VMI Ice Hockey draws players from all over the U.S. from various house and travel league backgrounds. Players of all levels are encouraged to join the team.
With its rigorous academics and physical fitness, VMI makes a Keydet hockey player well rounded on and off the ice. VMI is not only an institution of higher learning, but it prides itself in making every student an athlete. With a state of the art weight room which is over 7,000 square feet of space and has over 15,000 pounds of free weights and over 2,000 pounds dumbbell weights it provides the strength conditioning the Keydets need to perform well on the ice. Along with the weight room the Keydets are proud to play in one of the best home facilities in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, the LaHaye Ice Center in Lynchburg, VA.
