VMI Has a Commanding Presence at the Big South’s First Undergraduate Research Symposium

The Big South Athletic Conference held its first undergraduate research symposium (BigSurs) at Coastal Carolina University on March 23-24, 2007. Thirty eight presentations were given by forty two cadets. On a per capita school enrollment basis, VMI had a five to twenty fold greater student body participation than any of the other seven participating schools. VMI accounted for approximately 25% of the 170 presentations.

Five cadets won awards recognizing the quality of their abstract submissions. They were cadets Michael Lloyd ‘07, Karen Bill ‘07, Mark Parton ‘08, John Limauro ‘07, and Michael Doughton ‘07. Accompanying the cadets were six faculty and one staff person. They were COL Jim Turner ’65, Professor of Biology/Chemistry and Director of Undergraduate Research; LTC Wade Bell, Associate Professor of Biology; MAJ Dan McCain, Assistant Professor of Chemistry; MAJ Elizabeth Baker, Assistant Professor of Economics and Business; Ms. Patricia Hardin, Associate Director of Undergraduate Research and Instructor of Modern Languages and Culture; and Ms. Leslie Joyce, Administrative Assistant for Undergraduate Research. Majors McCain and Baker and Ms Hardin received travel awards from the Undergraduate Research Initiative.

The next BigSurs meeting will be held in 2009 at the University of North Carolina at Asheville.
