For many donors, planned giving, that is the use of such vehicles as bequests, individual retirement accounts, annuities, and charitable remainder trusts, represents the means by which they can best balance their desires to help VMI financially and to protect their wealth and that of their families.
In the past few years, the VMI Foundation has made an extensive effort to educate members of the VMI Family about how using planned giving can have a mutual benefit to them and to VMI. In conjunction with the VMI Keydet Club, the Foundation established the Washington Arch Society to recognize those alumni and friends who support VMI by using planned gifts.
This concerted effort to encourage this form of giving has borne impressive fruit. In the past two fiscal years (2010 and 2011) donors using planned giving made more than $16.6 million in commitments and VMI received more than $8 million in support through realized planned gifts.
