Since it was established in 1936 . . .
The VMI Foundation has worked toward two goals: to provide Virginia Military Institute the extra financial support it needs to maintain and advance VMI’s singular education and to ensure that young people who are attracted to a VMI education have the opportunity to reap its many rewards.
The VMI Foundation launched its first official fundraising effort in 1939. This campaign was focused on providing benefits for the faculty, academic improvements, and increased funding to then-new Preston Library. The VMI Foundation now supports almost every aspect of the Institute’s extraordinary education. Every cadet, teacher, and staff member benefits, directly or indirectly, from the VMI Foundation’s work and its donors’ generosity. Without the support the Foundation provides, VMI would not stand out as boldly as it does on the landscape of American higher education.
Throughout its history, the VMI Foundation has been fortunate to have leaders and donors who appreciate the critical role that constant and generous private support plays on Post and who realize that sustained action is necessary to generate such support.
The VMI Foundation will continue to play a leading role in the development of the financial resources necessary for VMI to keep pace with its continuing needs and to meet its future challenges. In this effort, it will continue to combine vigorous fundraising and careful stewardship with the consistent engagement of the enduring spirit and substantial energy of VMI’s alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and friends.
