Getting Questions Answered

QuestionVMI has a breathtaking array of resources and people dedicated to help and answer questions...so many that the number of potential advisors can themselves become confusing.  This is a summary of many key resources.  If these people can't answer your question immediately, they will know who to call to get the answer.

Faculty advisor

The academic department (click here for a list with contact information) can tell you the name and contact information of your cadet's faculty advisor.  This person knows your cadet well and can help resolve all academically-related issues, and knows who to call to resolve other issues.

Cadet Advising Office

The cadet advising office coordinates advising duties with faculty and tutoring schedules with cadets.  They also teach a variety of academic skills (e.g. time-management) to cadets and conduct disability testing.  They can be reached at (540) 464-7769 or by email.

Financial issues

Tuition payment questions can be handled by (540) 464-7321.  Financial aid can be arranged through (540) 464-7208 or by visiting their homepage.

Registrar

Questions relating to course registration can be answered by either the registrar at (540) 464-7213, or if you are a cadet and have the password, online by PostView.

Chaplain

Chaplain Park can help cadets cope with a variety of problems from faith issues to emergency travel, and can be reached at (540) 464-7390 or by email.

Guardroom/Visitor's Center

When no one else is available, cadets in the guardroom are always present.  They can find a cadet at any hour to deliver important news, notify the right people if a flight is delayed preventing attendance at a formation, or just relay the news about the football game that's in progress.  (540) 464-7306.

Commandants Office

Anything to do with the uniquely military nature side of life at VMI, from arranging leaves (absences from VMI) to penalty tours, can be answered by the Commandant's Office at (540) 464-7313.  The rules themselves are listed in the Blue Book.

Parents Council

The Parents Council is dedicated to serving the needs of the VMI cadet parents and maintains an excellent webpage.  There is a chapter serving your area, and a network of parents with deep ties within VMI.

Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Neel has generously offered to be an ombudsman of complaints and questions — if you can't get a good answer elsewhere, contact him either through email or at (540) 464-7706.  He works in the Commandants Office and has seen and resolved just about any problem imaginable during his long Army career.

Class '09 Advisor (Me)

Each class year of cadets has a professor or staff member dedicated to helping the class as a whole.  I am the advisor to 2009, and I'll help answer questions from them or from their families.  You can access my homepage to find out more about me, including my home and work telephone numbers, home and work addresses, and email.
