VMI fields teams in the following sports:

VMI is a member of the Big South Conference. The Big South currently consists of nine member institutions and sponsors 17 Division I Championships with league crowns awarded in eight men's sports and nine women's sports.

VMI is a member of the Southern Conference for wrestling, and lacrosse competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
