Safety Officer

Virginia Military Institute Facilities Maintenance is accepting applications for a Safety Officer. This position will report to the Chief of Fire and Safety programs.

Job duties:

  • Perform eye wash, drench hose, and emergency shower inspections and maintain compliance documentation.
  • Execute monthly AED inspections, fire extinguisher inspections, and emergency lights testing,
  • Coordinate purchase of first-aid supplies and restock all kits.
  • Perform routine maintenance on fire systems and coordinate inspections and contractor maintenance calls.
  • Respond to fire alarms and related emergencies quickly and efficiently.
  • Conduct fire drills as mandated by fire code and complete required documentation. 
  • Perform crowd manager duties as required.
  • Execute collaborative team inspections of all Areas of Rescue Assistance on Post and coordinate identified service calls.
  • Champion VA 811 best practices on Post and assist with the location and mapping of post infrastructure and utility marking.
  • Investigate excavations on post to ensure safety standards are met.
  • Assist with maintaining natural gas operation records and inspections as required by the SCC. Investigate all reports of natural gas leaks on post and keep required records.
  • Coordinate security system inspections, maintenance, and service calls.
  • Expect to foster professional working relationships, maintain confidentiality, attend meetings, serve as office point of contact as needed, collaborate on policy reviews, and to address safety and risk management issues.
  • Will be required to occasionally work altered shift schedules to meet business needs.
  • Identified as essential personnel for the purpose of responding to emergencies and/or natural disasters.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor in the workplace.
  • Possess ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to earn OSHA 10 – General Industry certification.
  • Ability to earn OSHA 10 – Construction certification.
  • Familiarity with commercial and residential fire alarm and suppression systems.
  • Ability to learn and use environmental health and safety equipment and test procedures.
  • Ability to learn underground utility locating equipment and damage prevention practices.
  • Detail-oriented and committed to accurate and organized compliance documentation.
  • Willing to work an altered schedule as needed to meet business needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Journeyman or Master’s level card holder in electrical.
  • Experience in reading and evaluating blue print.
  • Experience in marking underground utilities.
  • Experience in conducting inspections on commercial and residential fire alarm and suppression systems.
  • Applicant holds OSHA 30 – General Industry certification.
  • Applicant holds OSHA 30 – Construction certification. 
  • Experience working with ESRI’s ArcGIS platform and execution of GIS workflows.
