JACKSON HOUSE MUSEUM

BEDROOM

With a fire going in the stove, the bedroom was a nice, cozy room to wake up in on a winter’s morning. It is easy to imagine Major Jackson shaving with his razor and preparing himself for his day.

The bedrooms of the house are located on the top floor with the exception of the room Thomas and Anna shared here on the main level of the house. Anna spent her mornings in the bedroom writing letters back home to family, reading, doing needlework, and perhaps just taking time to relax. Not a lot is known about Anna’s day-to-day routine, though her main responsibility was as mistress of the household. Unfortunately for Anna, she had no experience running a home of her own and relied heavily on Amy and Hetty, two of the enslaved women in the house, to help her in her new responsibilities. We have several conveniences here in the room, one of which is the stove. Thomas and Anna purchased several stoves on one of their trips up north shortly after moving into the house. A coal or wood-burning stove is a much more efficient way of heating your room. Several other items we have here in the room are the commode chair and also the washstand located just in the back of the room. Of course, with no bathroom in the house in the mid-1800s, this is your best convenience. Thomas loved Anna very much and wanted to make sure that she was very comfortable in her home. He gave her special pet names, such as Esposita, which is Spanish for little wife. While he loved her very much, he did love to play practical jokes on her. One of his favorites was to hide behind a door and wait for Anna to come in. When she walked into the room, he would pop out from behind the door and scare her, something Anna didn’t appreciate very much!
