JACKSON HOUSE MUSEUM

GARDEN

One of Thomas’ favorite recreations was gardening. He worked in his kitchen garden daily and was such a skilled gardener that he “raised more vegetables than his family could consume.”

Hi, I’m Denise. I’m the supervisor of interpretation at the Stonewall Jackson House. While we have many wonderful things to see at our museum, the gardens are a particular favorite of mine. To my right here is Jackson’s kitchen garden. The kitchen garden is basically just a “no-nonsense” garden located right outside the kitchen door. This convenient location makes it easy for the occupants to maintain and protect the garden and to harvest the fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are needed for meal preparation. We know that Jackson was an avid gardener. His wife wrote that he worked in his garden quite often, and that he derived an immense amount of pleasure from it. Jackson used a garden guide called The Family Kitchen Gardener. In his copy of that guide, there are notations in the margins indicating which vegetables he was interested in planting. Based on those notations and letters that he wrote to his wife and to his sister, we know he planted many varieties of vegetables. He had asparagus, beets, beans, carrots, peas, lettuce, tomato, peppers, onions, and potatoes. When you think about it, that is similar to the types of vegetables we plant in our home gardens right now. When Jackson lived here in the 1850s, kitchen gardens were quite common, and they were really something of a necessity. When you think about the fact that today we can run down to the Kroger or the Food Lion, they couldn’t do that. So if you wanted fruits and vegetables for your table, you had to grow them in your garden. In our garden, we employ the same practices that Jackson did in his garden. We cultivate, plant, and harvest by hand. We rotate crops amongst the beds, and we grow green manures and cover crops to enrich the soil. Thank you for your interest in our wonderful gardens. I invite you to take a break from the 21st century and relax in this beautiful spot that Jackson so enjoyed.
