All VMI cadets should maintain their own private health insurance coverage. Many cadets are covered through their parent’s policies but some cadets arrive at VMI with little or no coverage of any type.
For cadets who do not have medical insurance coverage, there are a number of options available to purchase student health insurance privately from third party companies at reasonable costs.
Health insurance is a required fee for all international cadets and will be charged to the cadet’s account. Please contact the Office of International Programs for specific coverage information.

Because of the physical rigors of the VMI system, VMI provides each cadet with accident coverage. This coverage is for accidents only (does not cover illness) during VMI sanctioned, supervised activities, and covers treatment costs up to a maximum of $5,000 per occurrence. If treatment costs from an accident exceed $5,000, payment of the excess becomes the responsibility of the cadet. This policy is secondary to any private insurance the cadet may have.

The VMI Athletic Department provides a supplemental insurance policy that covers NCAA athletic injuries occurring during an official practice or competition.
