George (Pete) P. Ramsey III '72

George “Pete” Ramsey III is a partner in the Counts Realty & Auction Group, one of the largest full-service auction companies on the East Coast of the United States and conducts auctions of land, timberland, commercial and industrial properties from Rhode Island to Georgia. Prior to joining the Counts Realty & Auction Group, Mr. Ramsey was President of Taylor-Ramsey Corporation, a lumber products manufacturing company, headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Mr. Ramsey is involved in numerous organizations in Lynchburg. He has served on the Board and as Chairman of James River Day School, a private elementary day school, as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Lynchburg College School of Business, and as a member of the Board of Junior Achievement of Lynchburg. Mr. Ramsey served as Chairman of the Virginia Aviation Board (1994-2003), a gubernatorial appointment, where he was responsible for advising the Governor of Virginia, the Secretary of Transportation, and the Director of Aviation on all matters relating to aviation in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was a member of the board of the local hospital’s foundation and was a member and President of the Board of Boonsboro Country Club. He was also on the Board of Cooperative Savings & Loan prior to its merger with a national bank. He currently serves on the AAA Mid-Atlantic Virginia Regional Board.

Mr. Ramsey received a B.S. in biology from Virginia Military Institute in 1972. While a cadet, he earned monograms in both football and track. In football, he earned first team All-State, All-Big 5, All-Southern Conference, and Honorable Mention All-American honors. He was Co-captain of the football team his senior year. In 2005 he was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame. In addition he was named to the Dean’s List several times and achieved the rank of lieutenant in the Corps of Cadets.

Mr. Ramsey has been active in the Virginia Military Institute alumni organizations since his graduation. He has served on the Board of Governors of the VMI Keydet Club (1991-1996), as a member of the VMI Athletic Council (1993-2001), and on the Board of Trustees of the VMI Foundation (1999-2007), and as President of The VMI Foundation (2004-2007). He currently serves on the VMI Foundation Investment Committee.

Mr. Ramsey and his wife, Margaret, live at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia and have four grown children and six grandchildren.
