The Virginia Military Institute seeks an innovative, user-focused librarian to specialize in the creation, analysis, and maintenance of metadata. The Metadata Librarian will play a leading role in developing and implementing metadata strategies associated with digitization efforts. In collaboration with other staff, the Metadata Librarian will evaluate the effectiveness of metadata for resource discovery and access and develop metadata schema for library systems. The Metadata Librarian will participate in the management of e-resources and assist with the expansion of online collections and new digital initiatives. The Metadata Librarian will also provide training, consultation and documentation on the creation and application of metadata to faculty, staff and student workers. Additional responsibilities include original and copy cataloging of digital and print content. The successful candidate for this challenging and varied position must have excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills, an aptitude for analytical work with an attention to detail, and have the ability to prioritize, plan and manage projects in various departments of the library.
This is a permanent professional position. The salary is in the low 40's.
MLIS/MLS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent degree at the time of appointment. Knowledge and experience with metadata and cataloging standards and schema, such as MARC, EAD, FRBR, Dublin Core, MODS, AACR2, RDA, OAI/OAI-PMH, LCSH, bibliographic standards, and LC Classification. Experience with OCLC cataloging utilities, integrated online library systems, discovery tools, and digital repository systems, e.g., CONTENTdm. Knowledge and experience with a programming/scripting language or XML, CSS and other web markup languages. Ability to create SQL queries. Knowledge of current trends in metadata and digital library development.
