Information Technology Security Officer

Virginia Military Institute’s Department of Information Technology is accepting applications for a full-time Information Technology Security Officer. Reporting to the Director of Information Technology this position is responsible for defining and monitoring a comprehensive information security program that includes contingency management, risk management, awareness training, and compliance with the institution's objectives and regulatory requirements. This position has no staff and supervises no one.
-Evaluates the data and communications security needs at the institution and develops strategies to meet the immediate and future security requirements
-Maintains policies and procedures to protect the electronic assets and data processing activities of the institution
-Recommends to management new policies, standards, guidelines and procedures for information security, contingency management and risk management
-Prepares documentation of security policies to inform staff, faculty, students, or any other users of the institution and/or operated system resources
-Provides leadership in establishing information security hardware and software standards
-Conducts risk analysis to provide a measure of the relative vulnerabilities and threats to information resources so that security safeguards can be effectively utilized to minimize the potential for future loss
-Conducts an annual Continuity of Operations Plan tabletop exercise
-Provides awareness training for users concerning security and contingency management
-This position also has the role of the Institute’s Privacy Officer and the EVA (Electronic Virginia procurement) system
-Other duties as assigned
-Excellent task management, written and oral communications skills are essential
-Experience in a security program with a company or institution that entails identifying important data classification, understanding critical processes, establishing policies and procedures, administering access to a network environment and provisioning or building computer security hardware or software tools
-Hands on experience with user authorization, authentication, Windows Active Directory, encryption (public and secret keys), intrusion detection and monitoring
-Knowledge of network topologies and hardware and software technologies, including the interface and integration requirements of automated information and data processing systems
-Minimum five years of experience in information security, information technology or related field.
-Experience in developing and administering an information security program desirable. Working knowledge of and experience in the policy and regulatory environment of information security, especially in higher education is desirable. Ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of constituencies essential. A demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people is required.
-Certifications in one or more of the following is desirable – CISSP, CISA, CISM, CCNA, CNE, MCSE
This is a full-time position with a generous benefits package. Starting annual salary rate will be negotiable up to $79,000 based on credentials and experience.
