Laboratory testing showed that the respiratory illnesses last semester were caused by Adenovirus 4 and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. We have not seen any similar infections following winter break. We are hoping for a healthier spring semester, but we encourage all cadets to continue careful hand-washing and proper hygiene to decrease the chance of illness spreading in barracks.
The VMI Infirmary is a modern medical facility located in the Post Hospital building on the VMI campus. It is open 24 hours a day during the fall and spring semesters. A team of nurses, a nurse practitioner and a physician evaluate and treat cadets for routine illnesses and injuries. There are 18 inpatient beds for overnight observation and isolation for those cadets who cannot comfortably or safely stay in barracks. Cadets with more severe illnesses are referred to the local hospital or a specialist for care.
There is no extra charge to visit the Infirmary or see the nurse or doctor. Many medications are dispensed at no charge. Lab tests ordered or appointments off Post will be the responsibility of the cadet.
