VMI Employees to Run-Swim-Run in Beijing
July 22, 2011
LEXINGTON, Va., July 22, 2011 – Two VMI employees will head to Beijing, China, this September to compete in the 2011 International Triathlon Union Aquathlon World Championships.
Maj. Pieter deHart, assistant professor of biology, and Maj. Jennifer deHart, physical plant staff engineer and sustainability coordinator, will complete the 2.5-kilometer run, 1-kilometer swim, and final 2.5-kilometer run in the competition Sept. 7.
Pieter deHart qualified when he defended his title as USA Triathlon Aquathlon national champion in his age group, 30-34, on May 21 in Longmont, Colo. His finish in that race, 39 minutes, 29 seconds, placed him fifth overall, third among amateurs.
Jennifer deHart qualified through the “skills-based” process, submitting her best swim and run times from the past year, both good enough to earn her a place on Team USA.
Both athletes competed in last year’s world championship event in Budapest, Hungary, Pieter deHart, the first Team USA man to cross the finish line, placing third in his age group and Jennifer deHart, the first Team USA woman to cross the finish line, placing third in hers, also 30-34.
