Baseball - Highlights
The past several seasons of VMI baseball, led by head coach Marlin Ikenberry, have brought a stunning turnaround to a previously fledgling program. With the opening of Gray-Minor Stadium in 2007, the Keydets have one of the state's best collegiate baseball stadiums, and they have taken full advantage.
Two wins over highly-ranked Virginia, including a 2010 win over the then-#1 ranked UVA squad (VMI Athletics' first win over a #1 ranked team), have been part of a run that has seen VMI defeat a ranked team five of the past seven years. In fact, in 2010, the Keydets earned their first national ranking ever, reaching a high water mark of 26th in the Collegiate Baseball tally.
The squad has posted five winning seasons in six years, the first time that has happened in program history, and has seen at least one player selected in the MLB draft following each of the past six seasons. Former Keydet Trey Barham '08 was one of those draftees, chosen by Oakland, and reached AAA late in the 2011 season.
2012 will bring a talented freshman class to Lexington, one of the best recruiting classes in the Ikenberry era, as the team looks to continue this run of success.
