VMI football under head coach Sparky Woods has seen several positives under this regime. In 2009, the Keydets took #1 Richmond to the limit at City Stadium in a back-and-forth battle, and then held a lead late in the game at Army. That season marked the second time in three years VMI had led the FCS in rushing, utilizing a triple-option attack, but for the 2010 year, the Keydets switched to a triple option offense.
2010 also saw alumnus Tim Maypray ’09 join the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes and make several highlight reel plays, including a 125-yard return for a touchdown in his debut. Maypray was the first VMI alum to play pro football since Thomas Haskins, who played in the CFL in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.
2011 marks the second year of Coach Woods’ pro-style offensive attack, and also brings the return of The Citadel to the schedule, as the “Military Classic of the South” will take place on October 29 in Charleston.
It promises to be an exciting game, just one part of another exciting year for Keydet Football.
