Cadet/Alumni Email FAQs

Why are we changing / upgrading now?
Microsoft has mandated the retirement/upgrade of Live@EDU to Office365 with a deadline of September 2013. We are participating in the upgrade at this time to qualify for partner assistance at no charge.
Why are we getting an additional account?
 The new Office365 account is mandated by Microsoft. Your existing Live@EDU account will remain active allowing you access to your SkyDrive.
How do cadets connect to email?
  1. Go to http://vmiconnect.vmi.edu or http://www.outlook.com/mail.vmi.edu(we suggest you bookmark these links).
  2. Enter your username which should be your VMI username followed by @mail.vmi.edu
  3. Enter your password.  (The first time you login, you will be forced to change your password.)  Remember to change your email password in any email apps (including Outlook) that you use on your computer, tablet, or mobile phone to match your new Office 365 password.
How do alumni connect to email?
 You will first need to create a new password by signing in to https://eduupgrade.office365.com and following the directions. Once you have the password, access your email at this location: http://vmiconnect.vmi.edu or http://outlook.com/mail.vmi.edu.
My password is not working.
If you are a cadet and you are unable to use the reset password option on the Office 365 site, take your photo ID to the Barracks Help Desk and your password can be reset.  If you are an alumni or a cadet who is off Post, you will need to email help@vmi.edu for instructions.
Will my email address change?
No, your email address will not change.
Will my email account be deleted when I graduate or leave VMI?
No. One of the advantages of this email system is a “lifetime” VMI account. Upon graduation or leaving the Institute you will keep your VMI email account for life!
What browsers can I use to access my email account?
Most web browsers support the Outlook Web application that you use to access your email. If you use a browser that doesn't support the full feature set, Outlook Web App will open in a light version. For further details, visit Microsoft's Outlook Web App Supported Browsers knowledge base entry.
Can I keep track of other email accounts (such as Gmail) from within my email account?

Yes, please see Microsoft’s instructions on how to keep track of email from other accounts by connecting to them from your Outlook Web App account. You can connect up to five other accounts, such as Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo! Mail accounts. This lets you send, receive, and read mail from all the accounts in one place.

 
Can I access my email with a desktop client such as Outlook?

Yes, you can access your account with different email clients (such as Outlook Mac Mail, etc.). To find your desktop client IMAP or POP, port and SSL settings, sign in to your VMIconnect account and click the ? For Help, then click About.

Note: If you don't know whether to use IMAP4 or POP3, consider IMAP4 because it supports more features and always keeps a local copy of the message on the server after you retrieve a copy to your local computer.
