Keydet Club Hosts Annual Leadership Outing

With an ominous weather outlook heading into the day, the storms mostly stayed away from the Leadership Outing making for a great, cool day of fellowship. In 2011 the Keydet Club merged the Annual Leadership Golf Outing and the Jeff Morgan Pup Cup from two special events into one, spectacular golf outing. This year the Keydet Club raised $23,000 in support of the Jeff “Pup” Morgan ’80 Memorial Scholarship through the generosity of Jeff’s Brother Rats and many members of the VMI Family. With over 118 golfers in attendance the golf outing produced some interesting results as usual. The teams were broken into two flights: the Hobie Doyle ’34 Flight and the Giles Miller ’24 Flight. It was a fun day for all, and here were the results from the day:

Each Leadership Member got to choose which event they would like to participate in for the day before all members joined together at Moody Hall for one of the best highlights of the year- Chef Mike Goff’s elaborate dinner display. The menu for the evening included soft-shell crabs, oysters Rockefeller, lolly pop lamb chopts, petite crab cake sandwiches, beef tenderloin, blackened scallops, shrimp on the barbie, ribs, and a host of sides. The dinner was capped off with a special group of speakers who addressed the group. VMI Football Head Coach Sparky Woods had great things to say about his VMI Football program before handing the microphone over to VMI Basketball Head Coach Duggar Baucom. Coach Baucom mentioned a lot of the strengths of his team coming into the 2012-2013 season as well as their upcoming games against West Virginia, Old Dominion, and Virginia Tech before introducing a former player of his, current member of the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats Reggie Williams ’08. Reggie spoke briefly about his path to the NBA and what it’s been like coming back to visit VMI. He emphasized how much the Keydet Club does for cadet-athletes like him, and he thanked the Keydet Club for their hard work by pledging on the spot to become a Keydet Club member. Finally, the Featured Speaker for the event was NFL Official Keith Washington ’87. Keith spoke highly of his experience at VMI and how well it translated to his career as an official. He emphasized team work that he developed in the Corps with his Brother Rats as well as on the athletic field with his teammates. Many members stayed around for over an hour to socialize and meet Keith and Reggie.

The Keydet Club looks forward to many more of these outings for years to come, and with products like Keith Washington ’87 and Reggie Williams ’08 coming from VMI it’s easy to see how great of a return on their investment these Leadership Members are getting.
