The DVD, Highlights: VMI Academic Year 2011-2102, collects three- to six-minute video clips of the biggest events of the year in more than one hour of video. Segments on matriculation, the Rat Crucible, Rat Olympics, Cadet Oath Day, and Breakout focus on 4th Class cadets and their upper-class leaders while segments on Ring Figure, Change of Command, Commissioning, and Commencement shift the focus to the upper classes. Other events, such as Parents Weekend, the New Market Parade and Ceremony, and the dedications of Shell Hall and Crozet Point, are also presented.
VMI videographer Stephen Hanes has taken his cameras into events both public and restricted, with cadets often facing the camera to explain the events in their own words. Cadets are stationed behind the camera as well, serving as part of Hanes’ staff to offer the cadet perspective and gain experience in media work.
The DVD is available for purchase for $25. Other DVDs, focusing on specific VMI events, are also available for $40 each. Sales of the videos benefit the mission of VMI.
Parents, cadets, and alumni interested in preserving their memories of VMI may also want to visit the VMI Photo Store for prints, mugs, T-shirts, and other items bearing photos they select themselves.
