MIT Professor to Discuss Society and Technology
Dr. Sherry Turkle
LEXINGTON, Va., Sept. 11, 2012 – Dr. Sherry Turkle will offer insight into society’s relationship with technology at VMI’s Academic Convocation Sept. 12. The convocation, which is open to the public, will take place from 11:15 a.m. to noon in Cameron Hall.
Turkle is the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and is the author of several books on society’s relationship with technology. She holds a joint doctorate in sociology and personality psychology from Harvard University and is the director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self.
Turkle’s talk, “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other,” will echo themes from her most recent book of the same name. Cadets enrolled in the VMI Honors program, as well as those who earned academic stars, received copies of the book last spring from the dean’s office.
The talk is part of the H.B. Johnson, Jr. ’26 Distinguished Lecture Series.
