New Members for Board of Trustees


This past summer, Hugh M. Fain III ’80 and M. David Gibbons, MD ’68 joined the VMI Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

A native of Richmond, Hugh M. Fain, III ’80 is the son of the late Hugh M. Fain, Jr. ’49C. As a cadet, he was vice president of his class and a prosecutor on the Honor Court. After graduating with a B.A. in Economics with Distinction, he attended the University of Virginia School of Law and received his J.D. in 1983.

Mr. Fain is a member and the managing director of Spotts Fain, a law firm in Richmond, Virginia, which focuses on advising, counseling, and representing businesses with interests in Virginia and beyond. He is a past president of the Richmond Bar Association, and he currently serves as president of the Virginia Bar Association.

Mr. Fain’s excellence as an attorney is widely recognized. His peers named him in two categories in Best Lawyers in America: Bet-the-Company Litigation and Commercial Litigation, and the magazine Virginia Business has placed him on its “Legal Elite” list each year since 2003.

He is a past president of the VMI Club of Richmond and was the president of the VMI Alumni Association from July 2000 to July 2002. He also served previously on the VMI Foundation’s board from 2005 to 2011. Upon his return to the Board, he assumed the position of Vice President – Fundraising.

Mr. Fain and his wife, Renee, live in Richmond with their three children.

M. David Gibbons, MD ’68 matriculated in 1964 from Stamford, Connecticut. After graduating as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Dr. Gibbons attended the Medical College of Virginia (MCV). After graduating in 1972, he began a five-year residency in surgery and urology which was followed by a one-year Fellowship in Pediatric Urology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He then served in the Army’s Medical Corps from 1978 to 1981, entering the Army with the rank of Major.

For the past 29 years, he has been an attending pediatric urologist at the Children’s National Medical Center, the Fairfax Hospital for Children, and the Georgetown University Hospital. He also has been a Professor of Urology and Pediatrics at the George Washington University and the Georgetown University Schools of Medicine in Washington, DC. He serves as Director of Urology at Georgetown University Hospital and Head of Pediatric Urology at the Fairfax Hospital for Children.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the European Society for Pediatric Urology. His work has earned him acknowledgement nine times in the “Top Doctors” edition of the magazine Washingtonian and three times on the annual “Top Doctors” list of the magazine Northern Virginia.

Dr. Gibbons served as an alternate trustee from July 2011 through June 2012.

He has been married for 35 years to Dr. Martha Blechar Gibbons, a PhD. nurse psychotherapist in private practice. They reside in Washington, DC.
