Registration Open for New Market Homeschool Day
NEW MARKET, Va., Feb. 15, 2013 – Hundreds of homeschoolers will descend on the New Market Battlefield park for Homeschool Day March 23. Registration is now open for the sixth annual event sponsored by the Virginia Museum of the Civil War, located at the park.
“This is one of the largest living history events for homeschool students in the state,” said Maj. Troy Marshall, site director.
This year the Virginia Museum of the Civil War will staff the New Market Battlefield park with more than 50 volunteers and historical interpreters, turning the 300-acre site into a hands-on learning center.
Visitors are invited to join the Confederate Army and practice drill, dance the Virginia Reel, enjoy 19th-century games and crafts, take a guided tour through the battlefield, and learn about historic foodways. Displays by area ecological groups will educate participants about the unique natural resources found in the park.
“This program is made possible in part by the generous support of our 2012 sponsors, which include The Home Educators Association of Virginia, Chick-fil-A of Harrisonburg, and Wendy’s of Harrisonburg,” said Marshall.
The park and museum are located just off I-81Exit 264 at New Market. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information or to register to attend, call 866-515-1864 or visit www.vmi.edu/newmarket. Special discounted admission of $3 per person is available only to registered families.
