VMI Community Theatre To Present ‘Harvey’
LEXINGTON, Va., June 17, 2013 -- The VMI Community Theatre will present the classic “rabbit” comedy Harvey, by Mary Chase, Tuesday through Saturday, June 18-22, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 23, at 2 p.m. in Gillis Theater in Marshall Hall.
This Pulitzer-Prize winning play opened on Nov. 1, 1944, at the 48th Street Theatre in New York, offering a mixture of fantasy, comedy, and farce with Elwood P. Dowd and his invisible rabbit friend, Harvey. When the mild-mannered, easy-going Elwood starts to introduce his imaginary 6 ½-foot friend to guests at a society tea, his sister Veta decides that she has seen enough of his eccentric behavior and will have him committed to a sanitarium for treatment. She wants to spare her daughter, Myrtle Mae, and her family any further embarrassment. Problems arise, however, and by the end of the play, Harvey has worked his unique magic on others besides Elwood.
The VMI Community Theatre cast, directed by Joellen Bland, includes Michael Brickler as Elwood P. Dowd; Laura Holt as Veta Louise Simmons; Tom Oxendine as Dr. William Chumley; Chris Russell as Dr. Lyman Sanderson; Katherine Casey as Nurse Kelly; cadet Parker Cantelou as Wilson, the sanitarium attendant; recent RHS graduate Alethea Vest as Myrtle Mae Simmons; Jack Page as Judge Omar Gaffney; Donna Pagnam as Mrs. Betty Chumley; Jan Lowry as Mrs. Ethel Chauvenet; and Ned Riester as E. J. Lofgren, the cab driver.
The VMI Community Theatre is opening its third summer season with Harvey and will hold auditions for the Civil War melodrama Secret Service later this month for production in July. The Community Theatre is open to anyone interested in performing or assisting with crew, sets, lights and sound, costumes, make-up, props, publicity, and box office.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens 65 and older, and free for cadets. Reservations are not necessary. For additional information, call or email 540-464-7389 or email@example.com.
