LEXINGTON, Va., June 20, 2013 – Four Virginia Military Institute professors will be heard on Public Radio’s With Good Reason in late June and early July. Brig. Gen. Charles Brower, professor of international studies, and English department faculty members Cmdr. Alexis Hart and Col. Roger Thompson will be heard in the episode “From Combat to College” the week of June 30 while biology professor and ornithologist Col. Dick Rowe will be heard in “Not Just for the Birds” the following week.
When President Ronald Reagan traveled to Normandy in 1984 to mark the 40th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, Brower, a young army officer, was with him and deeply moved. In an interview originally aired in October 2011, Brower discusses a project that takes VMI cadets on tours of the American cemeteries for the fallen soldiers in France.
As part of the same episode, Hart and Thompson, in an interview that first aired in January 2012, discuss their work under a national two-year grant to study veterans returning to college and to the writing classroom. The two have traveled around the country visiting colleges to share information on practices that facilitate the transition to academia of the tens of thousands of soldiers returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Both Hart and Thompson have resigned their VMI faculty positions as of June 30.
In an interview that originally aired last September, Rowe will discuss his research on bird song. He’ll discuss findings that suggest that birds can alert other birds not only to the degree of danger present but also what kind of threat is out there.
The two episodes can be heard in the local area the weeks of June 30 and July 7 as follows: Sunday at 1 p.m. on Radio IQ in Lexington at 91.5 FM, Charlottesville at 88.5, and Roanoke at 89.7; Monday at 7 p.m. on WMRA in Charlottesville at 103.5, Harrisonburg, at 90.7, Lexington at 89.9, and Winchester at 94.5; and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on WVTF in Abingdon at 90.1, Charlottesville at 89.3, Roanoke at 89.1, and Lexington, 101.9.
With Good Reason is sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.
